What is Warhammer 40K?

Most of the information you need to know about Warhammer 40,000 can be read in the above section about the Warhammer game in general. However, if you are looking for information on science-fiction settings in general, or want to decide if the Fantasy or futuristic science fiction setting of Warhammer is best for you, read on. Warhammer 40,000, most commonly known as Warhammer 40K has a clear futuristic, technological/robotic theme as well as space travel features. Although Warhammer 40K can be put in the same "science fiction" category as the very famous Star Trek and Star Wars series, most players would place this game more in the subgenre of cyberpunk or apocalyptic science fiction, comparable to the famous movies "Mad Max" and "Aliens." It also has distinctive similarities to the BattleTech (© FASA Corporation / WizKids) Mechwarrior RPG and PC game.

Warhammer 40K takes place in the Warhammer world, but far in the future. The races that are known from Warhammer Fantasy are mostly represented in 40K, with a few changes and exceptions. Significantly represented are the Human, Elven and Chaos armies, with a general good vs. evil theme. In an article called "Welcome to the Dark Millennium" Games Workshop welcomes you to the Warhammer 40,000 galaxy with this introduction "For 10,000 years, the galaxy-spanning Imperium of Mankind has endured, surviving disasters, heresies and invasions from alien races intent on the extinction of humanity..." The armies of Warhammer 40K include: Chaos Daemons, Chaos Space Marines, Daemon Hunters, Dark Eldar, Eldar Imperial Guard, Necrons, Orks, Space Marines, Tau Empire, Tyranids, and Witch Hunters.
